leonardo da vinci : the codex leicester

why does the moon sometimes shine only partially?

a) if the moon is located between the earth and the sun, the sun’s light shines upon only part of the earth. in this case the moon is illuminated only from the parts of the earth’s oceans that do not lie in the shadow of the moon.

b) if the earth is located between the sun and the moon, then only that part of the earth’s oceans can reflect the sun’s light on the earth that is not covered by the earth. in this case too there is only a partial moon.
